I have an eerie ancestry. On my father's side is an Irish immigrant who fought in the American Civil War in the 37th New York Infantry. He's buried in an unknown grave in Virginia. On my mom's side is a Turkish soldier who fought in World War I in the 57th Turkish Infantry. He's buried in a mass grave in Çanakkale (Gallipoli Peninsula). Maybe thats why I have such a fascination with the dead.

I'm an American, half-Irish and half-Turkish. Most people think that Turks are Arabs. Not so. They come from central Asia originally. Many are are very Eastern European looking. My mother has sandy hair and light blue eyes. People who meet her for the first time look at her oddly because she has such a strange accent. They get really puzzled when she tells them she's Turkish. I can always tell what they are thinking: "But she's not DARK!" I'm not dark either. I'm probably whiter looking than you. I've got mousy brown hair just like my dad (now dyed black), and blue eyes. Why am I telling you all this? I'm bored. |

I live in New York City. I wish I lived in Istanbul. Istanbul is very gothic, in a Muslim kind of way. (BTW - I'm not a Muslim. My parents are agnostic and I'm inventing my own eclectic religion which contains elements of many religions including Islam.)

I love the sound of air raid sirens, tornado sirens, tsunami sirens, or other outdoor warning sirens. When I was younger I'd watch the original "The Time Machine" (1960) movie over and over again just to listen to the air raid sirens in some of the scenes. My parents thought I was a little weird, but they indulged my peculiar interest and even bought me a small, antique hand-cranked air raid siren for my 15th birthday. Its the coolest thing I own, but I have to drive it out to my grandpa's country home in the mountains because I can't "play it" in the city or I'd be arrested for sounding a false alarm. Its not a musical instrument, but makes the most haunting "music" I've ever heard.

WTF? A goth who doesn't list a bunch of vampire movies? Dare to be different. "Gangs of New York" is my favorite movie, even though I could care less for Leonardo DeAssihole. Daniel Day-Lewis. Repeat. Daniel Day-Lewis. Greatest. Performance. Ever.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm not a traditional goth. So don't bother sending me message asking me why I don't have any goth music on my playlist and telling me I'm not a true goth. Eat me. I'm creating my own style and I live my own life and don't give a rat's ass if you think I don't fit your tiny little definition of what a true goth is. I am not an ass-kissing conformist. I don't sneer at your style, so don't sneer at mine. "To see me does not necessarily mean to see my face. To understand my thoughts is to have seen me." - Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
